Burnley suffers double agony at the hands of Doncaster
Burnley was in for a bitter shock as they were beaten hands down by Doncaster, who until now has been lurking at the bottom of the table, 2-1. The team also had to swallow the harsh reality of missing their captain, Steven Caldwell from the first leg of leg of his club’s Carling Cup semi-final against Tottenham next week as he was sent off during the match played at the Keepmoat Stadium.
The former Newcastle and Sunderland defender who has been slapped a two match ban, will now have to sit out the club’s next fixture slated to take place at White Hart Lane. Looks like Steven Caldwell will have to restrict himself with to the exercise machines, like the Reebok 5 series treadmill, whilst he team is out on the pitch. The only consolation for the battered club is that it could have been even worse, as Caldwell’s teammate Chris Eagles escaped a similar fate after knocking down Rovers goalkeeper Neil Sullivan.
Burnley manager Owen Coyle however was skeptical of the ban imposed on his player, and said that it was a bit harsh on the part of the referee. He stated that he has no complaint about the penalty, but for the red card as the player apparently was surrounded by two or here players for the referee to have a conclusive idea.
James Coppinger played an important role in putting his team, Doncaster ahead as he was agile enough to grasp a miscued clearance by Stephen Jordan and Clarke Carlisle to score a thumping goal past the goalkeeper from close range in the 37th minute.
Coyle described it as the most decisive moment of the match since the goal was self inflicted. He added that it put the team in disarray as it kept on making one mistake after another. The situation took a special nose dive a minute later for Burnley, as Caldwell was found guilty of pulling back Richie Wellens just inside the penalty area, which invited a penalty as well the dismissal of the player.
