Betrayed by fate and crippled by exhaustion Burnley makes tearful exit from Carling Cup semi-final

If you are a fan of Burnley it would take me by surprise if you say that you are not heartbroken by their heartbreaking exit from the Carling Cup semi-final. They have done just about everything they could, making the impossible look possible, only to see fate play a very heartless game with them.

It is not often that you find a team that is pummelled 4-1 in the first leg, come back with such vengeance and erase the deficit by giving their heart and soul to the cause. It is precisely what Burnley did on that fateful night and by the end of play, save injury time, was leading 3-0. Then, as if a thunderstorm had struck, the team was left shell shocked when Roman Pavlyuchenko and Jermain Defoe scored a goal each out of the blue in injury time.

Earlier, Burnley was out to accomplish a mission that has been termed bigger than the Mount Everest, and they were doing it in style via goals from Robbie Blake, Chris McCann and Jay Rodriguez, drawing wide applause from the capacity crowd. But, their legs began to wear out and found the extra-time a bit too much to handle, giving Tottenham the opening they were looking for to counter punch. They did exactly that, and in the process now meet Manchester United in the Carling Cup final.

Such was the shock element that the crowds who had come in hordes were left devastated, and many were even seen crying unabashedly, whilst other assuredly went to drown their sorrows in Smirnoff Red Label Vodka. Parents especially found it really difficult to console their young sons, who still couldn’t believe what they saw, was real.

Tottenham would be really thanking their stars as they didn’t deserve to be in the final, playing pathetically for the major part of the game, and looked out of sorts making a mockery of their fancied status.
