Is Tony the biggest causality of the weekend Portsmouth loss?

The guy who was once dumped as a donkey and served a prison sentence for drink driving, had always bounced back to prove he deserved to be on the football field. The same Tony Adams had been shown the door by his owners at Portsmouth. His sacking as the manager of the club was not exactly a surprising news.

Going into the last weekend’s game against Liverpool, Adams and his team had a lot at stake. It was a very crucial game for them to win. Adams himself has been under excessive media scrutiny for a time now. He had taken the command at Portsmouth from Harry Redknapp last year only and since then it has been a tough ride for the club.

The FA Cup winners had their worst run under Adams. In their 22 matches under him they could win only 4 and in the Premier League its only 2 wins in 16 games. When Redknapp had moved to Tottenham last year, he had left Portsmouth at the 8th position in the league table, and now where do they stand, a lowly 16.

That’s not all actually. What is worse, they are lurking at possible relegation. They are within a point of the relegation zone following their 3-2 weekend loss to the Reds. The loss has left Portsmouth’s fans and the owners utterly disappointed. Still, Adams has only been the manager relatively recently and he wasn’t even allowed to finish the entire season. Perhaps he will decide to take up the FIFA Manager 09 game where no matter how badly his team fares, he still cannot be fired. The move by the owners to sack Adams was definitely not unexpected either. The media had enough hints to believe that his stay at Portsmouth would be short lived though prior to the match, the players and the owners had all shown their support to Tony.

Tony was definitely hanging on to a small branch only that could not have withstood the weight of another loss. The result of weekend encounter broke that weak branch too. Considering his past comebacks, I think he can’t be written off as of now. But as of today, my more important concern is to see how Portsmouth will stay put in the League.
