Scolari sacking comes as a Surprise to the Football World

The manager who won Brazil its record 5th World Cup and took Portugal to the finals of the Euro Cup was sacked by Chelsea for he could not do any wonders with their team. Luis Felipe Scolari, the man who had taken charge of the West London club only seven months back was shown the door by the Russian tycoon Roman Abramovich owned club. The announcement that came via a statement by the club on their website dismissed him with immediate effect.

During the time Scolari was at the helm of affairs at the Blues they had mixed results and didn’t have a very successful run at the Premier League. After their last 0-0 draw against Hull City at home, they are placed at the fourth on the points table. They are as much as seven points behind the leaders Manchester United who have played one match less.

Scolari had been among the most sought after managers with many teams vying for him, including England’s national team till he took over from Avant Grant at Chelsea last year. He had started at a very high note with back to back wins but his luck changed when they were beaten by Liverpool last October that ended their 86-match unbeaten record at home.

It was a tough ride after that all along. They crashed out of Carling Cup in November and just about managed to enter Champions League knock out stages in December. The New Year didn’t bring any good news either as they lost to Manchester United as well as Liverpool. And now losing to Hull City was perhaps more than what the owners and the fans could have swallowed.

In spite of that Scolari’s sacking has shocked the football community world over. There have been all kinds of reactions related to it. The Brazil manager Dunga, who happened to be in England, has very rightly explained, “There’s no doubt about his (Scolari) skills, he’s is a world champion and you cannot doubt that.” He represents the football fraternity in proclaiming that it is only a matter of time before Scolari is back in a job.
