Hiddink set to take over Chelsea, albeit Temporarily
Putting all speculation to rest, 62 year old Russian boss is all set to take over the command at Chelsea, albeit temporarily. Guss Hiddink had been the frontrunner, rather the only name that was expected to fill in the boots of Luiz Felipe Scolari. So the announcement of his name by the club didn’t come as a surprise or anything.
The Dutchman is presently the manager of the Russian national team and there were some issues unresolved as to whether he’ll leave them or else how he’ll manage both. But he’ll continue to coach the national side and will be in Chelsea only for three months, i.e. till the end of the current season.
Hiddink, on his part, comes with a lot of experience and has already coached some of the top clubs in Europe and national team world over. Before his present assignment with the Russian team, he is contracted till World Cup 2010, he had been manager at Real Madrid, PSV Eindhoven, Netherlands, South Korea and Australia. There are a lot of expectations from him now and he is not going to have too much time to get to know the team. He is expected to meet the players soon and is likely to be a spectator for Chelsea’s 5th round match of FA Cup. In all likelihood he’ll be their boss for the Premier League clash at Aston Villa on the 21st February.
As for his appointment, he is raring to go in spite of the little time he has. He has close ties with the Blues’ owner Roman Abramovich who called him personally to inform him about the decision and to which Hiddink adds, “Abramovich does so much for Russian football that I wanted to give something back.”
What really sounded encouraging to me was the fact that Guus Hiddink wants to talk to Scolari to ask him to fill him in. He said that though he has not yet talked to the sacked coach but he, “will call him in the next day or two.”
But he being the coach for the present season only, who’ll take over Chelsea in the next season is yet to be finalised. So far Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of AC Milan, seems like the favourite.
But till then we can enjoy the present season which incidentally is becoming more interesting every week.
