Hiddink sounds hopeful for Chelsea’s season and more
Guus Hiddink is yet to take the command at Chelsea but has already expressed his hopes for his new club. As per his calculations they can still have a shot at the Premier League title. Well mathematically obviously yes. But the only thing that first goes wrong with the highly competitive EPL is the mathematics.
The current standings at the points table put Chelsea at 4th position with 49 points. That puts them 7 points off the top team Manchester United who have played one match less. Hiddink has even added the possibility of the Chelsea team defeating Fulham next Wednesday. That would drag Chelsea 10 points below with 13 games still left to be played. So as per calculations they still stand a chance.
The Dutchman was taken around the training facility by Chelsea on Thursday. He later on told the Chelsea TV, “There’s a 10-point difference but things can happen in the final stages of the championship.” He feels that to get more efficiency out of the players sometimes all you need is somewhat different approach. Though he clearly also said that the players were already very committed.
He knows his job won’t be easy as he takes over after the shocking dismissal of Scolari and the League entering the final stages. They are also still in the race for two others titles viz. Champions League and FA Cup. He agrees that he’ll have to work fast and will have to live “in the depth of the club” at the earliest.
In a new and very interesting twist to the whole story he also hinted that he just might stay longer with the Blues. He is contracted with the Russian national team till the next year’s World Cup and is on three month temporary assignment with the Stamford Bridge club. But he went on to add, “What happens after May is unclear.”
He had kept a different line throughout claiming he can manage both the Chelsea and the Russian team but now he thinks, “It’s difficult to make it work because the Premier League is challenging.” Let’s hope as far as Chelsea’s campaign is concerned there won’t be any more surprises.
